Jamii Sacco has intensified its expansion drive in the Nyanza region with the official launch of its Kisumu office, a move aimed at bringing financial services closer to small-scale traders, entrepreneurs and informal sector workers across the Lake Victoria basin.
The new office, located at Mega Plaza, underscores the Sacco’s strategy of expanding access to affordable savings and credit facilities while supporting grassroots economic growth.
Speaking during the launch event, Jamii Sacco Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Achieng, said the institution is committed to empowering communities by providing financial products tailored to the needs of small businesses and households.
“We are bringing our services closer to the people because we believe financial inclusion is key to economic empowerment. Through our savings and loan products, we want to help individuals and businesses unlock opportunities and improve their livelihoods,” he said.
Founded in 1972 to serve employees under the Department of Social Services, Jamii Sacco has since transformed into a leading cooperative society with a diverse membership that includes public servants, boda boda operators, market traders, farmers and other entrepreneurs.
Achieng said the Sacco’s expansion aligns with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which prioritises support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises as engines of economic growth and job creation.
He noted that many small-scale traders and informal sector workers continue to face challenges accessing affordable credit and structured savings opportunities, limiting their ability to grow their enterprises.
“Our focus is on supporting grassroots entrepreneurs, especially mama mboga traders, youth-led businesses and other small enterprises that form the backbone of our economy. We want to provide solutions that help them save, invest and expand their businesses,” he added.
The CEO also urged residents to embrace cooperative savings models, describing Saccos as effective vehicles for wealth creation, financial discipline and long-term economic security.
The opening of the Kisumu office marks a significant milestone in Jamii Sacco’s growth strategy and is expected to enhance access to financial services for residents across Nyanza and neighbouring counties.
As Kenya continues to push for greater financial inclusion, cooperative societies remain a critical pillar in extending credit and savings services to millions of citizens who are underserved by traditional banking institutions.
With over 54 years of operation, Jamii Sacco is positioning itself as a catalyst for entrepreneurship and community development, with its expanded presence in Kisumu expected to unlock new economic opportunities for businesses and households in the region.
