In the ever-changing realm of media, journalists based in Mombasa are being urged to not only adapt but to lead the charge in embracing emerging technologies.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is spearheading this call for innovation, emphasizing the vital role technology plays in sustaining profitability amidst global shifts in media consumption patterns.
Victor Bwire, Director of Media Training and Development at MCK acknowledged the importance of supporting journalists, especially those affected by media house closures, through initiatives like the newly launched Mombasa Press Club.
The Press Club’s mission is to provide a support system for journalists especially those who do not have a physical office by fostering professional growth, collaboration, and skill development.
“To support journalists further, MCK plans to create a website where journalists can post their content for free, expanding their reach and opportunities and it is through this we are encouraging them to invest more in human interest stories and apply form grants and awards and even those doing in vernacular languages, urged Bwere
Bwire draws attention to the hurdles faced by traditional media outlets and advocates for a proactive approach towards digital transformation envisioning a future where journalists leverage digital platforms to diversify revenue streams and cater to the burgeoning demand for online content, both locally and internationally.
In a bid to bolster journalist support further, MCK plans to launch a dedicated website where journalists can showcase their work at no cost, amplifying their visibility and prospects.
Moreover, the Press Club pledges to provide training in essential digital skills, explore investment avenues, and foster a culture of collaboration and idea exchange among its members.
Mombasa Governor, Abdulswamad Nassir who was at the launch lauds the initiative, underscoring the paramount importance of upholding journalistic integrity and autonomy, devoid of external influence by advocating for synergies between the Press Club and county governments to spotlight developmental endeavours and economic prospects within the region.
Chairing the Mombasa Press Club, Omar Shungu alias Ommy Dallas reiterates the organization’s unwavering commitment to upholding journalistic ethics while nurturing the professional growth of its members.
“The Club envisions itself as a nurturing community that not only enriches the media landscape in Mombasa but also serves as a catalyst for positive change beyond its borders and our club aims to bring all the Mombasa Journalists together,” Said Omar.
In conclusion, the journey towards media sustainability and innovation requires collective effort and unwavering dedication and The Mombasa Press Club stands ready to lead this transformative journey, inviting all journalists in the county to join hands in shaping the future of media
“Mombasa journalists are urged to seize the opportunities presented by technological advancements, leveraging them to chart a path towards a vibrant and prosperous media ecosystem and we as Media Council of Kenya we’re ready to help when needed,” closed the remark Bwere.
