Nyabondo Boys High School has unveiled a state of the art solar energy system valued at Ksh. 6 million.
The initiative aligned with the national climate change agenda, marks a transition from heavy reliance on the national grid to clean, renewable energy.
For years, the institution has grappled with exorbitant electricity costs.
“We are now relieved from paying huge power bills. This solar system will power everything within the school, allowing us to redirect funds to other critical academic areas,” said Mr. Opanga.
The comprehensive system is designed to handle heavy duty operations such as pumping water for the entire school, industrial baking for the school’s kitchen, powering Electric Poshomill operations and providing security lighting for the the entire school compound.
According to the school’s Principal Mr.Jared Opanga, the school has been coughing up nearly Ksh. 3 million annually in power bills a financial burden that often strained the school’s limited resources.
The project was made possible through a strategic partnership with Kcb bank Group,Beyond the initial installation, KCB has provided a robust safety net for the investment.
A bank representative confirmed that the system is fully insured against diverse risks, including fire, theft, earthquakes, and potential vandalism during student unrest.
Mr. Vincent Otieno a representative from Sentimental Solar Company Ltd,the firm behind the installation, vouched for the system’s longevity.
He noted that the batteries have a lifespan of 18 years and are designed to provide seamless energy without the “hiccups” or blackouts associated with traditional power sources.
The Board of Management (BoM) Chairman Dr.Joseph Omondi, emphasized that the move was a proactive decision by the board to future proof the school.
He highlighted that the 24 hour lighting would drastically improve student safety, eliminating the security risks posed by frequent blackouts.
However, Dr. Omondi issued a stern warning regarding the maintenance of the infrastructure to the students and security vigilance.
He urged the student body to act as custodiams of the technology and avoid any form of vandelism hence he further instructed the school’s internal security team to maintain a 24 hour watch over the solar arrays to protect them from external interference.
