Five out of the eight police officers implicated in the escape of 13 suspects from Gigiri Police Station on Tuesday morning have been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is seeking to detain the officers for an additional 14 days as investigations continue.

The officers in question — Corporal Ronald Babo, Constable Evan Kipkirui, Constable Millicent Achieng, Constable Zachary Nyabuto, and Constable Gerald Mutuku — were on night duty when the escape occurred. Among the escapees was the primary suspect in the murders of at least 42 women, whose bodies were discovered dumped in the Kware quarry in Embakasi. The other 12 suspects were Eritrean nationals detained at the station for overstaying in Kenya illegally.

The DCI has requested Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi to approve the extended detention of the officers as authorities wrap up investigations into the escape. Investigators believe the extended custody is necessary to fully uncover the details surrounding the jailbreak and ensure thorough accountability.

This incident has raised significant concerns about internal security lapses, especially considering the gravity of the crimes connected to some of the suspects. Authorities are under pressure to resolve the matter swiftly and restore public confidence in the integrity of the police service.
