As the battle for political influence in Migori County gradually takes shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, one name is increasingly emerging at the centre of President William Ruto second-term strategy in the traditionally ODM-dominated region — Dr Pamela Odhiambo.
The outspoken United Democratic Alliance (UDA) gubernatorial hopeful has intensified grassroots mobilisation across Migori, positioning herself not only as a challenger to incumbent Governor Ochillo Ayacko but also as one of the key political figures expected to expand President Ruto’s influence in Nyanza.
In recent months, Dr Pamela has embarked on an aggressive countywide campaign anchored on women and youth empowerment — a strategy political observers say is carefully designed to build a formidable grassroots movement while softening resistance against UDA in a region long perceived as an opposition stronghold.
During an empowerment programme at Uriri Centre, the gubernatorial aspirant brought together women groups and youth organisations in an initiative aimed at promoting economic independence, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
Addressing residents during the event, Dr Pamela framed empowerment as the foundation of social and economic transformation.“When women groups and youths are empowered, an entire community is uplifted and the economy of a county grows stronger,” she said.
The event, which attracted hundreds of residents, also turned into a political mobilisation platform for President Ruto’s re-election bid.
Dr Pamela openly campaigned for the Head of State, urging Migori residents to support his second term agenda, arguing that the Kenya Kwanza administration had initiated programmes targeting grassroots economic growth, youth employment and women empowerment.
According to the UDA aspirant, Migori stands to benefit more through closer collaboration with the national government if the county aligns itself politically with the ruling administration.
Residents attending the gathering reportedly assured her of their support both for President Ruto’s re-election and her gubernatorial ambitions, signalling what could become a major political shift in the county ahead of 2027.
Political analysts now view Dr Pamela as part of a broader strategy by President Ruto to penetrate the Nyanza voting bloc by nurturing strong local allies capable of challenging ODM’s long-standing dominance.
Her growing popularity among women and youth groups is increasingly giving her campaigns momentum, especially in rural areas where economic hardships and unemployment remain key concerns among voters.
Unlike conventional political rallies dominated by rhetoric, Dr Pamela’s approach has largely revolved around community engagement programmes, empowerment forums and economic support initiatives targeting vulnerable groups — tactics that appear to be resonating with sections of the electorate seeking issue-based leadership.
The youthful politician has consistently branded herself as a transformative leader focused on inclusivity, economic empowerment and development-oriented governance.
Her campaign messaging also appears tailored to contrast with Governor Ayacko’s administration, which has recently faced criticism from sections of local leaders over alleged slow implementation of development projects and internal political wrangles within the county government.
As the 2027 succession politics begin to gather steam, the emerging political contest between Dr Pamela and Governor Ayacko is expected to shape Migori’s political landscape significantly.
For President Ruto, a strong showing in Migori would represent a major political breakthrough in a region historically loyal to ODM leader Raila Odinga.
And for Dr Pamela Odhiambo, the empowerment-driven grassroots campaign may well become the vehicle through which UDA seeks to rewrite Migori’s political script.
