Rising from what was once idle public land, the Awendo Livestock Training Institute is steadily taking shape as one of the most ambitious agricultural education projects ever undertaken in Migori County, offering renewed hope to farmers, youth and livestock entrepreneurs across the region.
With construction progressing rapidly, the National Government has committed KSh270 million towards the establishment of the modern training institution, a flagship project launched by President William Ruto as part of his administration’s agenda to strengthen agricultural productivity through skills development and value addition.
The institute is expected to become a regional centre of excellence in livestock production, veterinary services, dairy farming, poultry management, animal nutrition and agribusiness, equipping young people with practical skills while supporting commercial livestock farming in Migori and neighbouring counties.
Awendo MP Walter Owino has welcomed the progress of the project, describing it as a transformative investment that will redefine the constituency’s economic future.
“The progress at the Awendo Livestock Training Institute is impressive and reflects the government’s commitment to transforming our constituency. This KSh270 million investment is not merely about putting up classrooms; it is about creating opportunities for our youth, empowering farmers with modern technologies and positioning Awendo as a centre for agricultural excellence,” said Owino.
The legislator noted that agriculture remains the backbone of Migori County’s economy, yet thousands of farmers continue to grapple with low productivity, inadequate technical knowledge and limited access to modern livestock production methods.
“For years our farmers have relied largely on traditional livestock keeping. This institution will bridge the knowledge gap by producing skilled professionals who can support farmers to increase production, improve breeding and embrace value addition. That is how we grow household incomes and strengthen food security,“ he added.
The project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to establish specialized agricultural training institutions across the country in an effort to modernize Kenya’s agricultural sector and attract more young people into agribusiness.
Its establishment is particularly significant for Migori County, where livestock farming remains one of the principal sources of livelihood alongside sugarcane cultivation, fishing, maize production and small-scale horticulture. Despite the sector’s enormous potential, livestock farmers have long struggled with disease outbreaks, poor breeding stock, inadequate extension services and limited market access.
Agricultural experts believe the institute will help address these challenges by producing skilled extension officers and entrepreneurs capable of introducing modern farming techniques and improving animal health management.
Beyond education, the construction itself has become an economic stimulus for Awendo. Hundreds of skilled and unskilled workers have found employment on the project, while local suppliers, transporters, food vendors and hardware businesses continue to benefit from increased commercial activity generated by the development.
Owino said the livestock institute complements other transformative national government projects underway in the constituency, including the Affordable Housing Programme near Anindo Comprehensive School, the construction of modern hostels at Awendo KMTC, housing development at the former NCPB grounds and the proposed modern market, all aimed at accelerating Awendo’s transition into a modern municipality.
“Development is not measured by one project alone. When you combine quality education, affordable housing, modern markets and agricultural training, you create an economy that works for everyone. These investments are laying the foundation for a prosperous Awendo where our young people can build successful careers without leaving home,”the MP said.
President William Ruto launched the Awendo Livestock Training Institute as part of the government’s commitment to expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions while supporting the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda through agriculture and food production.
The government expects the institution to serve not only Migori but also neighbouring counties in the Lake Region, producing graduates equipped to drive innovation in dairy farming, beef production, poultry enterprises, animal health and livestock value chains.
As construction nears completion, residents say the project represents more than another public institution.
Together with ongoing investments in housing, healthcare and infrastructure, the livestock training institute is steadily reshaping Awendo from a town historically associated with sugar production into a diversified economic hub where agriculture, education and enterprise are expected to drive the next chapter of growth.
