A vocal Migori County MCA, Felix Okwanyo of Macalder from Kanyarwanda Ward, has launched a blistering attack on ODM Party Leader Dr Oburu Odinga, accusing him of failing the Luo community and remaining silent as insecurity worsens in Migori, particularly Nyatike Sub-County.
Addressing residents, Okwanyo said Oburu cannot compare himself to Raila Odinga, whom he described as a leader who listened to the people and actively fought for Luo interests.
“Raila knew how to solve Luo problems. We gave you ODM to champion our interests, not to sit next to President Ruto sipping tea and asking for nothing,” Okwanyo said.
The MCA warned that if Oburu Odinga is unable to provide leadership, he should step aside, insisting that younger leaders are ready to take charge.
“If you can’t lead us, step aside. Even Babu Owino is more than ready,” he declared.
He further claimed that the Luo community is traumatized by political silence and abandonment.
“People loved Raila because he listened to us. That is what leadership looks like,” he added.
The agitated MCA was speaking in Maccalder ward in Nyatike constituency, painting a grim picture of insecurity in Nyatike, saying the situation has deteriorated to alarming levels.
He further revealed that four M-Pesa agents have been killed within one month, while others have lost millions in violent robberies in Migori County.
In one recent incident, an M-Pesa agent reportedly lost over KSh 2 million during a robbery and is currently fighting for her life at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.
The victims were allegedly shot at around 7:00 pm near police residential houses, raising serious questions about police response and preparedness.
“Omollo security in Nyatike is pathetic. We are a broad-based government, yet our people are dying,” decried the MCA to the PS interior.
Okwanyo openly criticized the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), saying the office has failed Nyatike residents.
“We will burst if this situation continues. There are officers who have overstayed here — they must leave. We want changes within two weeks,” he warned.
He also raised concerns about forest officers, accusing them of terrorizing locals under the pretext of protecting forests.
“If they continue like this, we will turn against them. They will not believe us,” he cautioned.
The MCA demanded scrutiny of individuals operating in Nyatike, saying the area’s gold-rich zones have attracted outsiders with criminal intentions, targeting hardworking miners and traders.
“We will not allow outsiders with bad intentions to terrorize our people,” he said.
Okwanyo also accused the current Member of Parliament Tom Odege of ignoring security concerns of his constituents stating that Nyatike currently lacks effective political representation, adding:
“We don’t have an MP as a community. I am the least person who should be addressing security concerns, but I have no choice.”
Similarly, the residents accuse police of negligence and sluggish response, claiming officers arrived late despite the proximity of police residences to the crime scene.
Fredrick Ochieng, who was the first responder, reportedly heard gunshots, rushed to the scene, and found both the victim and her husband shot.
He attempted to pursue the assailant but was overpowered because the suspect was armed.
