The political landscape in Migori County is witnessing a gradual but significant transformation as the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) intensifies efforts to expand its influence in a region that has traditionally been regarded as a stronghold of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
At the forefront of this political realignment is Migori gubernatorial aspirant Dr. Pamela Odhiambo, who has embarked on an aggressive grassroots mobilization campaign aimed at strengthening UDA structures, recruiting new members and positioning the party as a formidable force ahead of the 2027 General Election.
During a consultative meeting with UDA grassroots officials from Suna East Constituency, Dr. Odhiambo reiterated her commitment to building a strong party machinery capable of challenging the county’s established political order.
The meeting, attended by local party officials and coordinators, focused on strengthening grassroots networks, enhancing voter registration efforts and preparing the party for what is expected to be a highly competitive election cycle.
“I reaffirm my commitment to working closely with party members at all levels to build a strong and vibrant political movement. Together, we are confident of delivering victory for our party and securing the re-election of President William Ruto for a second term,” Dr. Odhiambo told the gathering.
She added that UDA’s growing popularity in Migori demonstrates a changing political mood among residents who are increasingly embracing issue-based politics centered on development, economic empowerment and service delivery.
“With the support of the people of Migori, I am optimistic about earning the mandate to serve as the next Governor of Migori County and ushering in a new era of transformative leadership and development,” she said.
UDA’s Expanding Footprint in Nyanza
The ruling party’s growing presence in Migori mirrors a broader trend unfolding across the larger Nyanza region.
Historically, the region has been synonymous with ODM and the political influence of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. For years, opposition politics dominated the region, with parties associated with President William Ruto struggling to establish meaningful political structures.
However, the political equation began to shift following the emergence of the broad-based government arrangement between President Ruto and Raila Odinga, which significantly reduced political tensions and opened avenues for collaboration between leaders from both sides of the political divide.
The cooperation has coincided with an increase in national government projects across Nyanza, including road infrastructure, affordable housing, market development, industrial parks and agricultural initiatives.
Political observers believe these developments have helped soften historical resistance to UDA and created opportunities for the ruling party to expand its influence in the region.
“The broad-based arrangement changed the political conversation in Nyanza. People are now focusing more on development and less on traditional political rivalries. That has created space for UDA leaders to engage communities that were previously difficult to reach,” observed a political analyst familiar with the region’s politics.
Migori Emerging as a Key Battleground
Among the counties in Nyanza, Migori has emerged as one of the most strategic battlegrounds for both ODM and UDA.
The county occupies a unique position politically due to its ethnic diversity, youthful population and growing influence in regional politics.
While ODM continues to enjoy significant support under the leadership of Governor Ochilo Ayacko, UDA leaders believe changing voter priorities are creating opportunities for alternative political voices.
Party officials say they are focusing on grassroots mobilization because they view voter registration as the foundation upon which future electoral success will be built.
According to UDA coordinators, thousands of young people who have attained voting age since the 2022 General Election remain unregistered and could play a decisive role in shaping future political outcomes.
“The youth will determine the next election. Our focus is on ensuring that every eligible voter registers and participates in the democratic process. That is why we are strengthening our structures at the grassroots level,” said a party official who attended the Suna East meeting.
Women and Youth at the Centre of the Campaign
A key component of Dr. Odhiambo’s political strategy has been her focus on women and youth empowerment.
Over the past several months, she has participated in numerous community engagements aimed at supporting women’s groups, youth organizations and small-scale entrepreneurs.
Her allies argue that economic empowerment remains one of the most effective ways of addressing unemployment, poverty and social inequality in the county.
“When women groups and youth groups are empowered, entire communities benefit. Economic empowerment is not just about individuals; it is about creating opportunities that uplift families and stimulate local economies,” she said recently during a community engagement forum.
Political analysts note that women and youth constitute a significant voting bloc in Migori and could prove decisive in determining the outcome of future elections.
The Road to 2027
Despite UDA’s growing confidence, political observers caution that unseating ODM in Migori remains a formidable task.
The county has long been associated with ODM politics, and the party continues to enjoy substantial support across several constituencies.
Nevertheless, UDA leaders believe that changing national political dynamics, growing grassroots structures and increasing engagement with local communities are steadily reshaping the political landscape.
For Dr. Pamela Odhiambo, the immediate objective appears clear: build a robust grassroots network, increase voter registration, consolidate support for President Ruto’s re-election bid and position herself as a credible alternative in the race for Migori’s top seat.
Whether that strategy will ultimately translate into electoral success remains to be seen.
What is undeniable, however, is that the ruling party is making its most determined push yet into one of Kenya’s most politically significant opposition strongholds.
As preparations for the 2027 General Election gather pace, Migori is increasingly becoming a county to watch—a political arena where old loyalties are being tested, new alliances are emerging and the battle for the future of Nyanza politics is quietly taking shape.
