Uriri MP Mark Nyamita has launched a scathing attack on the Migori County Government over what he termed a deepening healthcare crisis following the reported death of a woman during childbirth at Migori County Teaching and Referral Hospital earlier this week.
Speaking at South Sakwa in Awendo Constituency, Nyamita questioned how many more residents must lose their lives before decisive action is taken to improve health services.”How many more lives must we lose before those in authority act?” the MP posed.
Nyamita, who is also the ODM Treasurer in Migori County and a gubernatorial aspirant, said the latest maternal death was not an isolated incident, claiming several similar cases have been reported in recent days, raising concerns over the state of healthcare in the county.
He accused the county administration of neglecting critical health services by prioritizing projects he described as less urgent instead of investing in hospitals.
According to the legislator, funds should be directed towards buying essential medicines, equipping health facilities and employing more medical personnel rather than projects such as the construction of a county gate.
Nyamita further claimed that Migori County has only 17 qualified medical doctors serving its population, saying the number is far below what is needed to provide quality healthcare.
He called on Governor Ochilo Ayacko’s administration to urgently address staffing shortages, drug stock-outs and inadequate medical equipment, arguing that no family should continue losing mothers, children or other loved ones because of failures within the public health system.
His remarks come amid growing public concern over healthcare services in Migori following the reported maternal death at the county referral hospital, with residents calling for accountability and improvements in service delivery.
