A renewed push to increase voter registration among young people has kicked off in ernest in Awendo Constituency following the launch of the Enhanced Voter Registration exercise by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Area Member of Parliament, Walter Owino, has announced a strategic partnership between his office and the electoral body to drive mass youth registration under the “Niko Kadi” civic engagement movement, aimed at reversing voter apathy and strengthening democratic participation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“The IEBC begins Enhanced voter registration at the ward levels today 30th March 2026 up to 28th April 2026. In Awendo Constituency, we will be partnering with IEBC to mobilize those who are yet to register as voters. Be part of the change you desire to have in our country’s governance,” said Owino.
The exercise, which runs for one month across all wards in Awendo, is expected to target thousands of eligible but unregistered voters, particularly youths who turned 18 after the last election cycle.
Tackling Youth Voter Apathy
Awendo Constituency, like many parts of Kenya, has in recent elections grappled with low voter turnout among young people. Data from previous electoral cycles indicated that a significant number of eligible youth either failed to register or did not turn out to vote, citing disillusionment with political processes, lack of civic education, and economic frustrations.
The “Niko Kadi” initiative seeks to address these gaps by combining grassroots mobilization, civic awareness campaigns, and peer-to-peer outreach to encourage young people to take an active role in shaping leadership and governance.
Owino emphasized that meaningful change in governance can only be realized through active participation at the ballot.
Political Undercurrents Ahead of 2027
The voter registration drive also comes at a politically strategic moment for the second-term MP, who doubles as the Migori Branch Organising Secretary of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
With the 2027 General Election on the horizon, Owino is keen on consolidating his support base by expanding the voter register within his strongholds.
Political analysts view the move as both a civic duty and a calculated effort to solidify electoral dominance in Awendo, a constituency that has historically been a battleground for influence within Migori County politics.
Call to Action
Residents across Awendo’s wards are being urged to take advantage of the ongoing registration window by visiting designated IEBC centers with valid identification documents.
Local leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations have also been enlisted to amplify the message and ensure no eligible voter is left behind.
As the clock ticks toward the 2027 polls, the success of the “Niko Kadi” movement in Awendo could serve as a model for enhancing youth participation in Kenya’s democratic process.
