The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has officially nominated Abdi Ahmed Mohamud to replace the outgoing Chief Executive Officer, Twalib Mbarak. This decision follows a competitive recruitment process, which involved interviews with 14 shortlisted candidates. EACC Chairperson, David Oginde, made the announcement in a notification dated Friday, November 22, 2024.

The recruitment process involved interviews held at the Public Service Commission (PSC) House in Nairobi. The shortlisted candidates included Stephen Ngowa, Doreen Muthaura, Jackson Mue, Joseph Onyango, Paul Maina, Victor Okongo, Peter Lomulen, Obadiah Keitany, John Ole Moyaki, David Too, Abdi Mohamud, Justa Mwangi, Mohamed Mmaka, and Waweru Karanja. Interviews were conducted from November 19 to November 21, with Mohamud being interviewed on Thursday, November 21.

Abdi Mohamud, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, is a seasoned investigator with over 30 years of experience in handling corruption and economic crimes cases. He began his career in law enforcement in 1989 as a Cadet Inspector in the Kenya Police Service and later joined the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC), now known as EACC, in 2005. He has held senior roles, including leading the Directorate of Investigation and overseeing the Rapid Response Division. Mohamud holds a Master of Science in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester, a Bachelor of Laws from Mt. Kenya University, and a Professional Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

In his statement, Chairperson Oginde explained that the commission reviewed 172 applications for the position before shortlisting the candidates. The next step in the process will involve vetting by the National Assembly, in accordance with the law.

The vacancy for the CEO position was first advertised on September 17, 2024, with applications closing on October 7, 2024. The appointment follows the impending conclusion of Twalib Mbarak’s six-year term as CEO in January 2025.

The EACC, established under Article 79 of the Constitution and the EACC Act of 2011, plays a critical role in combating corruption, promoting ethics, and enforcing anti-corruption laws in Kenya.
