The push to improve learning infrastructure in Awendo has received a fresh boost following the completion of three new classrooms at Ranjira Comprehensive School in Central Sakwa Ward.
The classrooms, funded through the Awendo National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), were officially handed over to the school during a ceremony presided over by Awendo MP Walter Owino and Awendo Deputy County Commissioner Fredrick Ogola.
The project is part of ongoing efforts by Mr Owino to address infrastructure challenges in schools across the constituency, particularly the shortage of adequate classrooms occasioned by rising enrolment.
Speaking during the handover, Mr Owino said investment in education infrastructure remained a key priority of his development agenda, noting that learners require safe and adequate spaces to realise their potential.
“These three classrooms will help improve the learning environment at Ranjira Comprehensive School. Our children deserve classrooms that are safe, spacious and conducive to learning,” Mr Owino said.
He added that the NG-CDF would continue supporting projects that respond to the most pressing needs of schools and communities within Awendo.
“We are committed to ensuring that schools in Awendo have the infrastructure they need. A classroom is not simply a building; it is a foundation where our children acquire knowledge, develop their talents and prepare for the future,” he said.
The new facilities are expected to ease congestion at Ranjira Comprehensive School by providing additional learning space for pupils and creating a more favourable environment for teachers to deliver lessons.
For a school serving the local community, the additional classrooms are particularly significant as increasing enrolment continues to put pressure on existing infrastructure.
Mr Owino said education remained one of the most important investments that leaders could make at the grassroots, given its potential to transform the lives of children and improve the socio-economic prospects of communities.
“When we invest in our schools, we are investing in the future of Awendo. These children are the professionals, leaders and entrepreneurs who will drive the development of our constituency tomorrow,” he said.
The MP also emphasised the importance of involving communities in identifying development priorities so that NG-CDF projects address genuine local needs.
The handover was attended by Mr Ogola, whose presence highlighted the importance of coordination between elected leaders, national government administration and communities in the implementation of development projects.
Mr Ogola noted the importance of ensuring that completed public projects were put to proper use and maintained for the benefit of learners and the wider community.
“The completion of these classrooms is a positive development for Ranjira Comprehensive School. What is important now is to ensure that the facilities are well utilised and maintained so that they can serve learners for many years,” Mr Ogola said.
He encouraged the school community to take ownership of the facilities and work together to safeguard the investment.
The Ranjira project comes against a backdrop of growing demand for better education facilities in Awendo, with schools requiring additional classrooms, laboratories, sanitation facilities, libraries and other amenities to support effective learning.
While infrastructure alone cannot resolve all challenges facing the education sector, adequate classrooms remain an essential component of a conducive learning environment.
Teachers require sufficient space to conduct lessons effectively, while learners need classrooms that allow them to concentrate without the distractions associated with overcrowding.
Parents and local residents are therefore expected to benefit from the intervention, particularly as the additional facilities reduce pressure on existing classrooms.
The project also illustrates the role of NG-CDF in financing community-level infrastructure that might otherwise take longer to implement through conventional government development programmes.
For Mr Owino, the classroom handover adds to the broader education infrastructure agenda he has pursued since assuming the Awendo parliamentary seat.
His focus on schools reflects the growing recognition that constituency development must go beyond roads and other physical infrastructure to include investments that directly affect human capital.
“Development is not only about roads and buildings. We must also invest in our children because education gives them the skills and confidence to compete for opportunities. That is why supporting our schools remains a priority,” Mr Owino said.
The MP urged school management, teachers, parents and learners to take care of the new facilities and ensure that they serve their intended purpose.
The completion of the three classrooms is also likely to encourage similar investments in other schools across Awendo where infrastructure deficits continue to constrain learning.
Education stakeholders have repeatedly emphasised that improving the quality of education requires a combination of adequate infrastructure, sufficient teachers, learning materials and strong management.
For Ranjira Comprehensive School, however, the immediate challenge of limited classroom space has been partly addressed.
The three new classrooms now stand as a physical reminder of the constituency’s investment in education and provide pupils with additional space in which to learn and teachers with a better environment in which to teach.
As Awendo continues to invest in its education infrastructure, the focus will increasingly shift towards ensuring that such projects are sustained, properly maintained and complemented by other interventions capable of improving learning outcomes.
For the pupils at Ranjira, the handover marks the beginning of a new chapter — one in which learning can take place in more spacious and improved surroundings.
And for Awendo, the project adds another building block to the constituency’s broader effort to strengthen education infrastructure and expand opportunities for its young population.
