Heavy Rains Cause Traffic Disruptions in Nairobi; Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Further Weather Warnings

Heavy rains have caused significant traffic disruptions across Nairobi County and its surrounding areas, with major congestion on roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD). The rains, which began at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Monday, November 11, 2024, continued through much of the morning, leading to slow-moving traffic and challenges for commuters heading into the city.

The downpour has coincided with the Kenya Meteorological Department’s warning of more heavy rains expected across various parts of the country. The department had earlier issued a weather alert forecasting intense rainfall for parts of Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, and Meru counties, and advised that these conditions would persist over the next two days.

In addition to the warnings for Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, and Meru, the Kenya Meteorological Department indicated that rainfall is also expected in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South Eastern, and North Eastern regions. The department further cautioned that isolated areas in these regions could experience heavy rainfall, potentially leading to localized flooding and travel disruptions.

The areas expected to experience significant rainfall include:

  • Tharaka Nithi County: Chuka, Tharaka South, and Tharaka North.
  • Meru County: Tigania, Igembe, Buuri, and North, South, and Central Imenti.

The heavy rains have already caused major delays in Nairobi, as commuters struggle to navigate through the slick and often flooded streets. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, while public transport services are reporting delays due to the poor road conditions.

In light of the ongoing adverse weather conditions, the Kenya Meteorological Department has advised the public to remain vigilant and to expect continued rainfall over the coming days. They further recommend that residents in flood-prone areas take necessary precautions to avoid possible hazards related to the rains, including the risk of flooding and landslides in some parts of the country.

Key Tips for Commuters and Residents:

  • Avoid driving through flooded roads: If possible, delay travel until conditions improve.
  • Stay informed: Monitor weather updates and traffic reports for the latest information on affected areas.
  • Exercise caution on footpaths and sidewalks: They may become slippery and dangerous during heavy rains.
  • Be prepared for delays: Commuters are encouraged to allow extra time for travel into the city and other affected areas.

The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary.
