Uaisin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has criticized the sports Ministry for the stalled completion of the Kipchoge Keino stadium in Eldoret.
The Stadium built on rememberence of great athlete Kipchoge Keino succes on the track, has now seen 12 years constructuons under different Sports Cabinet Secretaries.
“Kipchoge stadium that was supposed to honour legendary athlete Kipchoge Keino and it has taken over a decade to be constructed,” said the governor.
Governor Bii decried that it was a shame that Uasin Gishu produces world-class athletes, but it has no modern stadium for training.
“Why do we even call ourselves the city of champions when we can’t construct a modern stadium for the same champions we celebrate when they win international races,”asked Bii.
He wondered why frequent trips to the region by Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has not yielded any fruits in terms of progress of the stadia completion, adding that the county intends to use it as one of the venues to host the forthcoming Devolution Conference in August this year.
“I saw Namwamba here the other day inspecting Kipchoge Keino stadium for the second time. Why can’t they tell us why it has taken so long for the construction to be completed,” he inquired.
The governer urged that if anyone was involved in squandering funds meant for the construction of Kipchoge stadium should be arrested immediately
Earlier this week, Sports CS Ababu Namwamba was in Uasin Gishu to inspect the construction of the stadium where promised to fasten the construction while warning that will not entertain delay from contractors.
Bii was speaking during the issuance of title deeds to over 500 residents of Uasin at the county headquarters on Thursday 22nd June.
During the same event attended by President William Rutos’s mother, Mama Sarah Cheruiyot, Bii appealed to MCAs to pass the county budget.
