Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly declared that he will not support any other candidate in the 2027 presidential race, stating that it is time for others to make way for him. The former Vice President emphasized that he has made significant sacrifices in the past, including stepping down for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in three previous presidential elections.

Speaking to Mulembe Nation radio stations on Thursday, Kalonzo stated that after waiting for 20 years, it is now his time to lead the nation. He expressed confidence in his ability to challenge President William Ruto in the upcoming elections, saying, “There comes a time when even the world acknowledges that it is your time.”

“I have waited for 20 years. The moment has come for others to pave the way for me so we can save this country,” Kalonzo declared.

Kalonzo has a history of supporting Raila Odinga’s presidential bids, stepping aside in 2013, 2017, and 2022. However, Kalonzo’s own bid for the presidency in 2007 ended in a loss to then-President Mwai Kibaki, after which he was appointed Vice President in the Grand Coalition Government.

Reflecting on his past decisions to step down, Kalonzo explained that they were not made impulsively, but after careful thought and consultation. “It wasn’t random—it was based on dialogue and careful analysis of potential outcomes,” he said. “I have stepped down for Raila Odinga for 15 years.”

Kalonzo also reminisced about his 2002 decision to withdraw from the race and support Mwai Kibaki as the NARC presidential candidate, even before Raila Odinga’s iconic “Kibaki Tosha” declaration at Uhuru Park.

Kalonzo’s recent remarks could complicate efforts within the opposition to form a united front in the 2027 election. Despite his declaration, he is currently working with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua to build a coalition to challenge Ruto. The group has expressed its intention to field a joint candidate, though Kalonzo’s statement could put the unity of the coalition to the test.
