Migori County leaders have congratulated President William Ruto on his election as Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), a position he assumed following the conclusion of Sudan’s Salva Kiir’s term in November.
While the appointment is a significant achievement for Kenya, the leaders emphasize that it also presents a critical opportunity for President Ruto to push for stronger regional integration, while tackling key governance and economic challenges at home.
Kitayama Marwa Maisori, Member of Parliament for Kuria East, Augustine Mwise, former MCA and Kuria East Parliamentary aspirant, and gubernatorial candidate Byron Oginga have all praised the President’s new role. However, their congratulations come with a firm call for action.
The leaders urge President Ruto to use his platform to enhance East Africa’s economic integration while simultaneously addressing critical issues within Kenya’s governance.
A Holistic Approach to Economic Revival
Kitayama urged President Ruto to adopt a comprehensive approach that will ensure Kenya’s economy is revived. “I believe that a broad-based government will help steer our economic ship, which was on the verge of sinking,” Maisori stated. He emphasized that President Ruto must act swiftly to close corruption loopholes and ensure that his subordinates work toward achieving both the Vision 2030 goals and the campaign promises made during his election.
On the appointment of Principal Secretaries (PSs), Maisori stressed the importance of President Ruto selecting the best candidates who can help deliver on the President’s pledges. “The responsibility is on him to choose the best individuals who will steer his campaign promises and bring tangible results to the Kenyan people,” he added.
A Regional Power Play: Boosting East Africa’s Economic Potential
The appointment of President Ruto as EAC Chair provides Kenya with a unique opportunity to shape the future of East Africa.
Augustine Mwise emphasized that President Ruto now has the chance to drive trade deals that will benefit not only Kenya but the entire region.
“Ruto must use this platform to secure partnerships that enhance East Africa’s economic growth, particularly in trade, infrastructure, and regional cooperation,” Mwise stated.
The leaders argue that President Ruto should focus on policies that can elevate Kenya’s status as East Africa’s economic hub, promoting both regional unity and strategic alliances with other parts of the world.
However, they also caution that this opportunity must be matched by swift domestic reforms. Mwise has called for a major overhaul of Kenya’s tax system to ease the cost of living and reduce the price of essential goods. Combating corruption, he stresses, is key to unlocking Kenya’s economic potential and ensuring sustainable growth in the region.
Internal Reforms: Tackling Governance Challenges
While President Ruto’s role in the EAC is vital, the leaders from Migori are equally concerned with the internal governance issues that continue to hinder Kenya’s development.
Byron Oginga, a prominent youth advocate, has criticized the persistence of political patronage in government appointments.
“Appointments to key positions should be based on merit, not political loyalty. The President must ensure that Kenya’s public offices are filled with competent, qualified individuals committed to public service,” Oginga said.
A major point of contention is the underrepresentation of youth in Kenya’s leadership. Despite a youthful population, with the majority under 35, only one young person—Water Cabinet Secretary Eng. Eric Mugaa—holds a significant Cabinet position.
This, according to Oginga, is a missed opportunity to tap into a demographic that could drive Kenya’s future. “The youth are not just the future—they are the present. If we are serious about national progress, young people must be given real decision-making power,” Oginga asserted.
Empowering Youth: The Need for Comprehensive Inclusion
The call for greater youth representation is not merely about fulfilling quotas but ensuring that young people have a voice in shaping the future of Kenya. Oginga has advocated for an overhaul of the Principal Secretary (PS) nomination process, urging President Ruto to prioritize merit-based appointments over political favoritism. He also called for a more transparent and rigorous vetting process for PS nominees to ensure they possess the necessary qualifications and integrity to lead.
“Kenya’s future depends on a government that values merit over patronage and embraces the full potential of its young population,” Oginga added.
The Path Ahead: From Words to Action
As President Ruto assumes his role as EAC Chair, the leaders from Migori are not simply offering congratulations—they are issuing a challenge. The time for empty rhetoric has passed. The President must act decisively, using his influence within the EAC and at home to promote economic growth, governance reform, and youth inclusion.
The global community is watching closely as Kenya, under President Ruto’s leadership, has the potential to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of East Africa. As the President navigates this new role, he must ensure that Kenya not only thrives domestically but also serves as a beacon of regional cooperation and leadership.
