Police in Kisumu have arrested two suspects and recovered 11 stolen vehicles in what authorities are describing as a major breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on a motor vehicle theft syndicate operating across Kisumu and parts of western Kenya.
The suspects — Michael Eric Mwaga, 32, and Peter Andei, 37 — were apprehended during coordinated intelligence-led operations conducted by officers from Migosi and Kasagam Police Stations.
According to a police report, the simultaneous raids targeted two homesteads — one at Khayeko Junction and another at Aliwa Village, located about two and four kilometers respectively from Migosi Police Station.
“The joint operation was led by the OCS Migosi and OCS Kasagam, following credible intelligence on the movement and concealment of stolen vehicles within the area,” the communiqué stated.
During the raid, police recovered 11 vehicles believed to have been stolen and which lacked valid ownership documentation. The vehicles are:
- KDE 662F – White Toyota Axio
- KDJ 631G – Grey Toyota Fielder
- KCY 973B – White Toyota Axio
- KDC 692P – Grey Toyota Axio
- KDG 157H – Grey Toyota Axio
- KDB 485H – White Toyota Fielder
- KDH 427F – Grey Toyota Axio
- KCQ 238G – White Toyota Axio
- KCM 385N – White Toyota Axio
- KCH 950M – White Toyota Fielder
- KCE 831E – Grey Toyota Fielder
A search conducted at the Aliwa home of Michael Eric Mwaga led to the recovery of additional exhibits, including three car radios (Toyota, Pioneer, and Sony), a dismantled rear number plate (KDC 629P), a set of plates bearing registration number KDG 157H, and assorted vehicle parts believed to have been stripped from stolen cars.
Police confirmed that both Mwaga and Andei were booked for being in possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles, as investigations continue to trace the rightful owners of the recovered units.
The operation is part of intensified efforts by the National Police Service to dismantle a sophisticated vehicle theft network believed to be operating within the western region.
Police also named Evans Otieno Meda as the main suspect, who remains at large. Authorities said they are following “crucial leads” to apprehend him.
“All the recovered vehicles have been detained at Migosi Police Station yard pending verification of ownership and further forensic analysis,” the report added.
Kisumu County Police Commander commended the joint teams for their swift action, reaffirming the Service’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
“The recovery of these vehicles is a clear indication of our continued vigilance and collaboration across police units. We urge members of the public to provide any information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspect,” he said.
