Public University Lecturers Boycott Work Demanding Implementation of 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement

On Monday, lecturers at public universities began a boycott of work, calling for the implementation of the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This strike, initiated at the Technical University of Kenya, follows a seven-day ultimatum issued by the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) starting August 26, 2024.

Key issues raised by the academic staff include:

  • Salary increments as stipulated in the 2017-2021 CBA
  • Delays in salary payments
  • Non-remittance of statutory and third-party deductions, including bank loans, SACCO loans and subscriptions, insurance premiums, NSSF, NHIF, and AHL contributions
  • Insolvency concerns related to the Staff Retirement and Benefits Scheme (TUK-SRBS)

The lecturers have indicated they will not return to work until these issues are resol
