Kenyan gospel music artist Reuben Kigame has unveiled a new protest strategy aimed at avoiding police violence and abductions during demonstrations. In a statement posted on his official X account, Kigame called for a nationwide stay-at-home action beginning Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
Kigame’s proposal suggests that Kenyans should halt all activities by remaining indoors, effectively paralyzing the country’s day-to-day operations. He argues that this approach will minimize the risk of confrontations between protesters and police, as well as reduce the likelihood of abductions that have plagued recent demonstrations.
“From Tuesday, let us stop the nation from moving forward. They oppress us because everything continues to move. #KaaNyumbani. Make sure you have something to eat. Then, no movement, no car, no supermarket, no groceries, no school, no hospital, no nothing for a whole day,” Kigame stated.
According to Kigame, by staying home and avoiding movement, transportation, business operations, and public services will be disrupted. He believes this will lead to a reduction in police violence, as there will be fewer people in the streets to target.
Kigame’s proposal comes in response to recent reports of violence and abductions during anti-government protests, which have led to injuries, arrests, and fatalities. He highlighted the plight of protesters, including journalists who have been injured while covering these events.
“This method ensures there will be no one to shoot at by the police, no goons to deal with, and no one to abduct,” Kigame added. “We need to act collectively to create pressure without risking lives.”
Kigame’s call for action aims to offer a peaceful alternative to current protest methods while addressing the need for safety and effective advocacy.
