The Senate will convene a special sitting on August 14, 2024 to deliberate on the allegations levelled against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
This follows the impeachment vote by the Meru County Assembly, where 40 out of 69 members supported the motion last week. Seventeen members opposed the impeachment, while three did not participate in the vote.
The charges against Governor Mwangaza include abuse of office, gross misconduct, and gross violation of the Constitution, among other laws. The impeachment marks the third such attempt to remove the Governor from office.
In response to the situation, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has recalled Senators from their short recess to reconvene for the trial. Speaker Kingi confirmed receiving a letter dated August 9, 2024, from the Speaker of the Meru County Assembly, informing him of the impeachment decision.
The special sitting is expected to draw significant attention as the Senate undertakes its constitutional duty to ensure accountability in the conduct of public officials.
