Turkana to Construct Cross-Border Markets to Boost Trade and Cultural Exchange

In an effort to promote trade and cultural exchange, Turkana County Government has unveiled plans to constructmodern markets at four strategic locations along the Kenya-Uganda-South Sudan-Ethiopia borders.

Chief Officer of Trade and Enterprise Development, Robert Loyelei, announced that contractors have been authorized to commence construction at Todonyang, Letea, Nadapal, and Lokiriama.

These cross-border markets aim to provide hundreds of residents and traders with opportunities for economic growth, particularly focusing on youth, women, and organized groups.

Emphasizing the importance of economic inclusion, Chief Officer Loyelei highlighted the potential for enhanced relations and commercial benefits derived from shared cultural roots.

“The infrastructure will offer traders a clean and secure environment to conduct their business ventures,” stated Chief Officer Loyelei.

Furthermore, the project aligns with the East Africa Community’s vision of establishing free trade zones along common borders, aiming to eliminate trade barriers and foster regional cooperation.

The markets will follow a “twin market” structural model to accommodate diverse commercial interests, facilitating trade between Turkana and neighboring regions. Additionally, a similar market will be constructed at Kapedo Napeitom Ward to promote trade relations with Baringo and West Pokot.
