The world mourns the sudden loss of Kelvin Kiptum, the reigning World Marathon record holder, and his Rwandese Coach Gervais Hakizimana.
The two tragically lost their lives in a road accident on Sunday night at Kaptagat area along Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road.
Police reports indicate the crash occurred around 11 pm, claiming the lives of Kiptum and Hakizimana on the spot, with their vehicle sustaining significant damage.
Kiptum, an athletic star, gained prominence by winning the fastest marathon debut in Valencia in 2022.
In 2023, he continued his ascent, setting a course record of 2:01:25 in the London Marathon in April.
Notably, on October 8, 2023, Kiptum broke the men’s world record, finishing the Chicago Marathon in 2:00:35, becoming the first to run a 42km marathon in under two hours and one minute.
Tragically, Kiptum’s untimely death occurred just a week after the International Track Federation World Athletics ratified his World Marathon Mark.
He was preparing to open his new season at the Rotterdam Marathon on April 14, 2024, and later compete in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games against the world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge.
The athletic community, leaders, and sports enthusiasts globally expressed their condolences on social media.
