The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results released on Thursday showcased significant academic improvement across a range of subjects. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed that students recorded a marked enhancement in performance in 17 out of the 30 subjects offered.
Key Subjects Showing Improvement
The major subjects where students excelled include Mathematics Alternative A and B, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History and Government, Geography, IRE, Agriculture, Woodwork, and Metalwork. Other subjects that saw improved results were Drawing and Design, Aviation Technology, Computer Studies, Kenya Sign Language, and Business Studies.
However, 10 subjects experienced a decline in performance, including English, Kiswahili, Biology for the Blind, CRE, Home Science, Building Construction, Electricity, French, German, and Music.
Gender Performance Breakdown
In terms of gender, female candidates outperformed their male counterparts in seven subjects: English, Kiswahili, Kenya Sign Language, French, Home Science, CRE, and Art and Design.
On the other hand, male candidates showed better performance in 23 subjects, including Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History and Government, Geography, and others such as Woodwork, Metalwork, Agriculture, and Computer Studies.
Candidate Numbers and Gender Distribution
A total of 965,512 candidates sat for the exams, marking a 7.19% increase in registrations compared to previous years. Of these, 480,310 were male candidates, while 485,202 were female candidates. This represents the highest candidate increase since 2020.
While overall performance improved in various subjects, the data indicates distinct gender disparities in subject preference and academic success. The Ministry of Education continues to monitor these trends to ensure all students have the resources and support needed to succeed.
