Construction of a modern 600-capacity storey dormitory has commenced at Bishop Odera Agongo Secondary School in Awendo Constituency, marking yet another milestone in the constituency’s drive to improve learning infrastructure and student welfare.
The project, funded by the Awendo National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) under the leadership of area Member of Parliament Walter Owino, comes barely a day after the fund officially commissioned six new classrooms at Agongo Primary School on Saturday—further demonstrating a sustained push to strengthen the education sector across the constituency.
The new dormitory is expected to significantly ease congestion in the school’s boarding facilities while providing a safe and conducive environment for hundreds of learners, many of whom travel from distant parts of the region to access secondary education.
Speaking during an inspection of the ongoing works, MP Owino reaffirmed his commitment to investing in education infrastructure, describing it as the cornerstone of sustainable development and empowerment of young people.
“Education remains the most powerful tool we have to transform our community. Through NG-CDF, we are committed to ensuring our schools have the facilities needed to nurture academic excellence and provide a safe environment for our students,” he said.
Once complete, the multi-storey dormitory will accommodate up to 600 students and is expected to improve the school’s capacity to host learners from across Awendo and neighboring areas. School administrators and parents have welcomed the development, noting that inadequate boarding space has long been a challenge affecting the institution.
The project forms part of a broader education-focused development agenda spearheaded by the Awendo NG-CDF, which has in recent years prioritized the construction of classrooms, laboratories, dormitories and sanitation facilities across several schools in the constituency.
Just a day earlier, MP Owino presided over the commissioning of six new classrooms at Agongo Primary School—an initiative aimed at addressing classroom congestion and enhancing the learning environment for pupils.
Residents and education stakeholders in Awendo have lauded the rapid pace of infrastructure development, saying it reflects a growing recognition of education as a key pillar for social and economic progress.
Local leaders observed that the improved facilities are expected to boost student enrollment, enhance performance and provide equal opportunities for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Background
Over the years, the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) has played a critical role in supporting grassroots development projects across Kenya, with education infrastructure emerging as one of the fund’s top priorities.
In Awendo Constituency, education projects have dominated NG-CDF allocations, with numerous schools benefiting from classroom construction, renovation of learning facilities, provision of desks, bursaries for needy students and expansion of boarding facilities.
The latest dormitory project at Bishop Odera Agongo Secondary School underscores the constituency’s continued investment in education as a pathway to community transformation.
Education stakeholders believe such investments will not only ease pressure on existing infrastructure but also create a more conducive learning environment that enables students to focus on their studies and achieve academic success.
As construction progresses, residents remain optimistic that the ongoing projects will further elevate the quality of education in Awendo, positioning local schools to compete favorably with institutions across the region.
