Awendo Constituency received a major boost in its education sector last Friday when the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Board commissioned and handed over several key learning infrastructure projects aimed at improving access to quality education and accommodating rising student enrolment.
The commissioning ceremony, led by Acting NG-CDF Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Magut, saw the official handover of a modern 240-student capacity dormitory at Bishop Odera Agongo Mixed Secondary School, three newly constructed classrooms at Get Comprehensive School, and five fully equipped classrooms at Ombasa Comprehensive School under the NG-CDF Best Practice Programme.
The projects are expected to address persistent challenges of overcrowding, inadequate boarding facilities, and limited learning space that have affected many schools within the constituency.
Speaking during the event, Magut hailed the investments as a demonstration of how NG-CDF resources can transform communities through education and create opportunities for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“These projects reflect the impact that strategic investment in education can have on communities. Improved learning facilities contribute significantly to academic performance and ensure students learn in a conducive environment,” he said.
The Board also commended Awendo MP Hon. John Walter Owino for championing education development initiatives across the constituency and ensuring effective utilization of NG-CDF resources. Owino serves as a member of the National Assembly Select Committee on NG-CDF, a role that has enabled him to advocate for improved educational infrastructure across the country.
Addressing residents and education stakeholders, Owino reiterated his commitment to investing in education as a cornerstone of development, saying quality learning facilities are essential for nurturing future leaders and professionals.
“Our goal has been to ensure every child in Awendo learns in a safe and conducive environment. Education remains the most effective tool for transforming lives and uplifting communities economically and socially,” said the legislator.
The event also featured a tree-planting exercise involving students, teachers, education officials and local leaders as part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental conservation and support the national campaign to increase forest cover.
Development Track Record Ahead of 2027
The commissioning of the projects adds to a growing portfolio of development initiatives that Owino is expected to highlight as he seeks to strengthen his political standing ahead of the 2027 General Election, where he is widely expected to seek a third term.
Since first being elected, the legislator has consistently prioritized education infrastructure, bursary support programmes, youth empowerment initiatives and road improvement projects, positioning himself as one of the key development-focused leaders in Migori County.
Education remains one of the most visible sectors benefiting from NG-CDF investments in Awendo. Over the years, dozens of classrooms, laboratories, dormitories and administration blocks have been constructed or renovated, helping schools cope with increasing enrolment and the demands of curriculum reforms.
Residents who attended the commissioning ceremony welcomed the new facilities, saying they would significantly improve learning conditions and ease pressure on existing infrastructure.
“The new classrooms and dormitory will provide a better environment for our children to learn and excel. Such projects directly impact families and give hope to future generations,” said a parent at Bishop Odera Agongo Mixed Secondary School.
Another resident noted that investment in education was laying the foundation for long-term economic growth in the constituency.
“When schools improve, the entire community benefits. Better education means more opportunities for our young people and a brighter future for Awendo,” he said.
Education as a Catalyst for Economic Transformation
Experts have long argued that sustained investment in education is among the most effective ways of addressing poverty and unemployment. Improved learning environments contribute to higher retention rates, better academic performance and increased access to opportunities for young people.
For Awendo, a constituency whose economy largely depends on agriculture, small-scale businesses and the sugar industry, investment in human capital is increasingly viewed as a key driver of sustainable development.
The projects commissioned last Friday therefore represent more than physical infrastructure; they symbolize a long-term investment in the constituency’s future workforce and economic competitiveness.
As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, the newly commissioned facilities provide tangible evidence of development on the ground, reinforcing Walter Owino’s narrative of service delivery through education and community empowerment.
For many residents, however, the significance of the projects extends beyond politics.
“What matters most is that our children now have better places to learn,” said a teacher who attended the event. “That is the kind of development that leaves a lasting legacy.”
