Parents have been challenged to play a more active role in instilling positive values and discipline among their children as education stakeholders gathered at Kitengela Furaha Children’s Academy to mark this year’s Education Day.
Speaking as the Chief Guest during the colourful event, a lecturer at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and researcher at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, emphasized that academic excellence can only be achieved when children are nurtured within a supportive environment built on strong moral values, understanding and guidance.
Dr. Ogara, who was accompanied by education advocates Mr. Sixtus Odumbe and Mrs. Daisy Ondimu Kisimbo, urged parents to invest more time in understanding the unique needs, strengths and challenges of their children.
“Children thrive when they are understood, appreciated and guided. Parents must go beyond providing basic needs and intentionally nurture values such as respect, honesty, responsibility and resilience. These values form the foundation of discipline and future success,” said Dr. Ogara.
She noted that increasing cases of indiscipline in schools can be effectively addressed through stronger collaboration between parents, teachers and communities.
“Every child is different. The more we understand our children, the better we are able to guide them towards making responsible choices. Education is not only about passing examinations but also about shaping character,” she added.
Addressing learners during the event, Dr. Ogara encouraged them to 7remain focused on their studies and embrace kindness and optimism regardless of the challenges they encounter in life.
“Take your education seriously because it is one of the most powerful tools you can use to transform your future. Be kind to one another, work hard and never lose your smile even during difficult moments. Challenges are temporary, but determination and good character will carry you far,” she told the pupils.
In a major boost for the institution, Dr. Ogara pledged to collaborate with Kitengela Furaha Children’s Academy through the Tunza Mentorship Program, where she is a founding member. The partnership will seek to connect the academy with professionals, mentors and organizations that can support educational development and improve opportunities for learners from vulnerable backgrounds.
“No child should be denied an opportunity to dream because of their circumstances. Through partnerships and mentorship, we can open doors and create pathways that empower children to realize their full potential,” she said.
Mr. Sixtus Odumbe echoed the call for responsible parenting, noting that communities have a collective responsibility to nurture children into productive citizens.
“The future of our society depends on the values we instill in our children today. Schools cannot do it alone; parents and communities must walk the journey together,” he said.
Mrs. Daisy Ondimu Kisimbo emphasized the importance of mentorship and emotional support in helping learners navigate the pressures of modern society.
“Children need role models who inspire them to believe in themselves. When families, schools and mentors work together, children become more confident, disciplined and focused,” she noted.
