The transformation of Kisumu’s urban landscape has officially begun following a groundbreaking ceremony for a massive 100 acre “Railway City” station.
The ambitious project, aimed at extending structured rail transport to Western Kenya, was launched in the presence of Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Kisumu County Commissioner Mohamed Ramadhan, and senior transport officials.
Speaking at the site, Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) Managing Director Philip Mainga announced that the mega project will be delivered on a strict one year deadline, fulfilling a development promise made by President William Ruto.
“We fully expect that this infrastructure will be complete on time to transform the urban layout of this city,” Mainga stated.
“This will be one of the largest stations in the country, residents will begin noticing visible structural changes within the next four months.”
Mainga urged the local community to cooperate with construction teams to prevent any operational delays.
Addressing the social and economic impact of the rail corridor expansion, Mainga reassured legitimate land occupants that the National Land Commission (NLC) is actively managing financial compensation for Project Affected Persons (PAPs).
However, the KRC boss Mr.Mainga issued a stern warning to illegal land grabbers trying to derail the project.
He added that on lawful compensation, the National Land Commission (NLC) is firmly on top of things regarding regularizing compensation.
To those who have been illegally encroaching the Kenya railway land to cause delays will not be tolerated and have been advised to vacate the land immediately.
Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o welcomed the mega development as a major win for the region’s economy.
He directed a strong message to the main contractor, demanding that local youth and subcontractors be prioritized for non specialized labor.
