In a dramatic twist, a legal dispute has erupted between Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, the Leader of the Majority Party in the National Assembly, and Governor George Natembeya of Trans Nzoia County, over alleged defamation.
Hon. Ichung’wah’s legal team, led by Adrian Kamotho Njenga & Co. Advocates, has responded forcefully to accusations made by Governor Natembeya in a letter dated 6th January 2025.
The dispute stems from remarks made by Hon. Ichung’wah during a public funeral gathering in Bungoma County on 3rd January 2025. Governor Natembeya, who was present at the event, has since claimed that the comments amounted to defamation. However, Hon. Ichung’wah’s legal representatives argue that the statements were based on facts and that the Governor cannot claim defamation after visibly endorsing the remarks.
Hon. Ichung’wah’s team also took a strong stance against Governor Natembeya’s public record, accusing him of being involved in serious human rights violations and crimes against humanity in the past. They refuted any notion that the Governor has societal standing or credibility, labeling his attempts to challenge Ichung’wah’s remarks as baseless.
In their response, Hon. Ichung’wah’s lawyers demanded an immediate retraction of the defamatory claims, a public apology, and cessation of all further defamatory statements. They made it clear that if the matter is not resolved amicably, they will take swift legal action to defend their client’s reputation.
This legal standoff highlights the growing tension between the two political figures, with each side digging in their heels.
The outcome of this dispute could have significant political and legal ramifications in Kenya’s ongoing political landscape.
