Azimio leader Raila Odinga addressed recent developments concerning his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson and the political situation in Kenya.

Mr. Odinga expressed deep concerns that his AUC candidacy may be exploited for political manipulation within Kenya. He emphasized his commitment to his country’s stability and declared his readiness to withdraw from the AUC race if necessary, stating, “I am ready to forgo my AUC ambitions for the sake of my country if this is being used to manipulate me at the expense of the quest for a better and stable country.”

Addressing recent allegations, Mr. Odinga vehemently denied accusations of bribery by the Kenya Kwanza administration to support a government of national unity. He clarified, “The idea that I have agreed to such a government is entirely false.” He also distanced himself from claims that his bid for the AUC Chairmanship is linked to supporting Ruto’s administration, reiterating his willingness to abandon his AUC candidacy to uphold his principles.

In a significant shift of stance, Mr. Odinga announced that he would not entertain any dialogue with President Ruto’s government until certain demands are met. These demands include accountability for lives lost and injuries sustained during anti-government protests, prosecution of security officers involved in misconduct during protests, and the abolition of the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) in favor of reinstating the old NHIF.

“I agree that justice must come first before any talks,” Mr. Odinga affirmed, aligning himself with the demands voiced by Kenyans advocating for justice amidst recent civil unrest.

Mr. Odinga concluded by advocating for a transparent and neutral platform for national conversations once these demands are addressed. He emphasized the importance of resolving these issues to pave the way for constructive dialogue in Kenya.
