Residents and students in Seme Sub-County are set to benefit from improved healthcare training and access to clean water following the commissioning of Sh5.8 million worth of water and infrastructure projects at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kombewa and its Langi satellite campus.
The projects were officially commissioned by Seme Member of Parliament Dr. James Nyikal, marking a major boost to health training facilities and efforts to address persistent water shortages in the area.
At the Langi satellite campus, Dr. Nyikal launched a new water project implemented through a partnership between the Seme National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) and the Osiligi Foundation. The foundation provided key equipment, while the NG-CDF allocated Sh1.3 million towards the construction of a water kiosk, storage tanks and an extensive piping system.
Dr. Nyikal said the project was designed to serve both the training institution and the surrounding community by providing access to safe and reliable water.
“I urge the community to take ownership of this infrastructure. Proper maintenance is the only way to ensure it serves the college and residents for generations to come,” he said.
Local residents welcomed the project, citing years of hardship in accessing water. A community member, Mrs. Hulda, said the water kiosk would significantly improve safety and livelihoods.
“We used to wake up as early as 4.00am to look for water, exposing ourselves to danger and the risk of sexual violence. This project has ended that struggle,” she said.
In addition to the water project, the MP also commissioned a Sh4.5 million infrastructure development at Kombewa KMTC. The package includes two modern classrooms, three offices for Heads of Department, a new septic tank and upgraded sanitation facilities.
KMTC Kombewa Principal Irene Okwaro lauded the continued support from the NG-CDF, saying it has played a key role in creating a conducive learning environment for students.
She also urged parents in the region to enroll their children at the institution to help bridge the shortage of healthcare professionals in Seme Sub-County.
Records show that since 2014, the Seme NG-CDF has invested Sh41,138,964 in the development of Kombewa KMTC, funding land acquisition, construction works and the equipping of both the main and satellite campuses.
Nationally, the NG-CDF, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, has facilitated the establishment of 61 new KMTC campuses across the country to expand access to medical training.
