The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced the removal of Cleophas Malala from his position as Secretary General.

The decision was made by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) following a series of incidents that culminated in chaos and confrontations at the party’s headquarters on Wednesday, July 31.

The tension escalated when  a self proclaimed Secretary General Joe Khalende stormed the party headquarters accusing Malala, the former Kakamega senator, of neglecting his duties.

The situation turned violent at Hustler Plaza on Ngong Road, resulting in Mr. Khalende being attacked and injured by thugs during the standoff.

In response to the turmoil, the UDA’s top decision-making body appointed deputy leader Hassan Omar Hassan as the interim Secretary General. A statement released on Friday, August 2, outlined the NEC’s actions and future plans:

“The National Executive Committee was convened today at the request of members of the committee to discuss, deliberate and agree on the way forward based on the events of the last few days in the party and fundamentally the events of the last few weeks in our country,” the statement said.

The party emphasized that the ongoing elections would allow members to choose their leaders from the polling station to the national level. The statement also highlighted the NEC’s constitutional role in providing policies and political guidance to the party.

“As NEC, the Constitution of the party mandates us to provide policies and political guidance to the party,” the statement affirmed. UDA underscored the necessity of continuously realigning their policies and political direction with the broader national political landscape and the collective aspirations of their members.

“As the governing and policy-making organ of the party, the NEC plays an essential role in driving the political agenda of the party,” the statement concluded.

The overtures come even after Mr Malala went to court seeking to restrain the party from holding a meeting to dicuss the party wrangles  terming it a move to illegally hound him out of office.
