University Student Leaders Call Off Planned Nationwide Strike

A faction of university student leaders has decided to cancel their planned nationwide strike against the government’s new funding model. Instead, they have issued a one-month ultimatum for the government to address their concerns.

At a press briefing held at Beirut Restaurant in Nairobi on Sunday morning, the student leaders urged the government to engage in bilateral discussions before implementing the controversial model. They highlighted widespread anxiety among students and parents due to the model’s perceived flaws, including incorrect student categorizations and financial burdens on families.

The student leaders acknowledged recent efforts by various stakeholders, including the government’s proposal to form an inclusive committee with student union representatives to review appeals and the funding model. They praised this initiative, despite ongoing dissatisfaction.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced new government measures to address the issues with the funding model, including the formation of two working committees with student leaders to oversee the review process.
