National Assembly Speaker Hon. Moses Wetang’ula has urged Members of Parliament to uphold transparency and integrity in selecting new commissioners for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking at a church service in Mokwo Parish, Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Wetang’ula reminded lawmakers of their responsibility to prioritize national interests over political agendas. He emphasized Parliament’s vital role in ensuring the IEBC comprises competent and impartial individuals, warning against decisions that could destabilize the country.
“You MPs are in the process of selecting a new IEBC. Please ensure you choose principled Kenyans who respect the law and uphold the Constitution,” he urged.
Wetang’ula stressed that a credible and independent IEBC is essential for maintaining electoral integrity and public trust in Kenya’s democracy.
While addressing the congregation, the Speaker reaffirmed his support for President William Ruto’s leadership and called on leaders across the political spectrum to focus on unity and development. He encouraged politicians to rise above divisions, cautioning that political instability hampers progress.
“We want a united Kenya. Even our Constitution states that Kenya is a unitary state,” he noted.
Wetang’ula also highlighted the importance of mentoring young leaders, sharing that he chose to attend an event hosted by a young leader, Hon. Kimaiyo, rather than a high-profile meeting with the President. He emphasized that seasoned politicians must support the next generation in leadership.
Additionally, he addressed recent political developments, including President Ruto’s meeting with ODM leader Raila Odinga, clarifying that strategic decisions within their political camp are made collectively through structured leadership.
Wetang’ula urged MPs and leaders to put Kenya’s interests first, particularly in electoral reforms as the country moves forward. His visit to Mokwo Parish reinforced his commitment to good governance and the role of political and religious institutions in fostering national unity and stability.
